Although the rise of social media began in the mid-2000s, it didn’t become mainstream until the 2010s. Unfortunately, this digital revolution happened during my adulthood, and I can’t stop myself from reflecting on the potential benefits I missed out on.
Instant communication would have been fun
Text messages were the main form of communication during my teenage years, but I see now that they were boring because they didn’t allow for sharing thoughts and ideas in real time. Chat apps are more dynamic and engaging, as they allow for the instant sharing of multimedia such as videos, images, voice notes, GIFs, and stickers.
Also, voice and video calls would have made conversations more personal and expressive. Video calls, in particular, could have bridged the gap between digital and face-to-face interactions much earlier, helping to form stronger bonds with childhood friends despite the distances.
It would have been easier to stay connected
Over time, family and friends can move away, making it difficult to stay in touch. Before social media, you had to make a lot of effort to stay in touch with them and stay updated about their lives. This was challenging for a child before social media, as means of communication were limited and meeting them often was not an option.
With social media platforms, I could connect with them indirectly through the regular updates (posts, photos and videos) they share online. I could remain an active part of their lives even from a distance.
I could be more entertained
If I had social media, a vast ocean of entertainment would be at my fingertips. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky keep me entertained with funny memes, viral videos and trending topics.
Also, if I want to learn a skill, explore a different culture, watch a music video or laugh at a comedy clip, platforms like YouTube and TikTok are there for me. It is hard to get bored with social media around.
Easy access to the latest news and updates
Social media has made it much easier to find news and updates these days. Back then, you had to rely on traditional media. But now, it’s at your fingertips.
You can get the latest news and updates, whether it’s current affairs, entertainment or science, in seconds. These are delivered to you in real-time and from diverse perspectives in a feed tailored to your personal interests.
I never give up some of my hobbies
Social media can help foster communities by connecting like-minded individuals across geographical boundaries. It makes it easy to share interests, organise events and support each other’s growth. Through hashtags, groups and forums, people can easily discover communities that align with their passions and goals.
Social media would have been invaluable during my skateboarding phase (inspired by Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, of course). I felt like I was the only skater in my area. Later, I learned that some kids in nearby areas had also tried the hobby and quit.
We didn’t have tools like social media to connect and create a supportive skateboarding community. I can’t help but wonder what might have happened.
